Celtic's majority shareholder was in Scotland today and as usual the shameless hacks masquerading as journalists at the Daily Record spied an oppurtunity to put the boot in. What did these charlatans want to talk about? Celtic's resurgence under Brendan Rodgers? Our fantastic result against the odds against Man City? Nope! Desmond was asked whether or not we could keep hold of potential superstar Moussa Dembele. Now before you roll your eyes just remember it's typical of the desperate need for the smsm to gather negative stories about Celtic, but this time they walked away empty handed as DD refused to play their silly game.
Dembele has been on fire with a hat-trick against newco Rangers and a deadly double against a Man City team which cost over 400 million to assemble. This kid has class! Forget about Rangers for a second and concentrate on the way Dembele took apart Nicolas Otamendi and Aleksandar Kolarov during that epic "Battle Of Britain" It was a thing of beauty and every Celtic fan was proud of the way we and particularly Dembele performed. Unfortunately it also alerted every scout from here to the moon about our young striker's ability, so much so that there has been nothing but "Dembele Leaving" stories in the media ever since. Stuff like that suits the smsm who would rather talk up the idea of a departure than the possibility of him staying. After all why would he leave the Scottish champions? We can offer him CL football and the chance to be a hero for a few years as he fulfils his potential of possibly being our best striker since King Henrik. Dembele has time on his side and there will be plenty years left yet to go chasing the big bucks at the highest level,
None of this was grasped of course, by the doom merchants at the Record who must have been bitterly disappointed when DD informed them that Moussa would be going nowhere and that Celtic don't need to sell any players. Such a comment is a serious swerve from the official line in seasons gone by. Who can forget players like Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper, Joe Ledley and Fraser Forster being sold for millions at a time when we were building the nucleus of a really great side. If rumours are to be believed, the man responsible for player recruitment and offloading is none other than Peter Lawell himself. Most fans blame him for the downsizing that has taken place since Martin O'Neill left. Regardless of who is too blame, the downsizing saw us finally hit rock bottom last year under Ronny Delia who oversaw one too many catastrophic European campaigns. Has Desmond told Lawell to back off? If so it represents a major change of policy at Celtic and just maybe Brendan Rodgers will be allowed to go and build a squad to take us to new heights. We can but dream....
Is Desmond right to say Celtic don't need to sell? What depths will the Record sink to next? Could Moussa Dembele grow into our best striker since the ,magnificent seven? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
