Sometimes a story appears in the paper that is so barmy you are almost tempted to believe the writer is at the wind up. Many a time upon reading an article you're double checking the date to make sure it's not April 1st and you're not the victim of some cruel newspaper joke. Such a scenario occurred today when the media reported the outcome of a Celtic fan's trial. The man in question had attended the Celtic vs Hamilton game and indulged in a spot of singing during the match. What song was this terrorist sympathizer singing?: Broad Black Brimmer? Go On Home British Soldiers? Nope! This man's crime was to join other fans in a chorus of "Roll Of Honour" Let that sink in for a second and then tell me what is offensive about that song? Better yet tell me what crime was committed. Nope? Well don't feel bad because neither can I. Somebody could though and you it doesn't take a genius of city trader proportions to work out who.
Leave it to Strathclyde's finest to do their warped version of serve and protect by finding some excuse to lift this guy under the "Offensive Behaviour at Football Act" or as it's more commonly known: "Operation Criminalize Celtic Supporters" This repulsive piece of legislation was dropped on us at great height by the SNP government and it should be repealed right now! Before some start ranting about how I am anti-SNP, well think again because there is no one who believes in that party and Independence more than me. On the day it was clear our independence wasn't going to happen I could have cried. For my Son and Daughter's future's and for everyone who thought outside the box and tried to drag Scotland kicking and screaming out of a union which was never fit for purpose. On that day Scotland was revealed to be nothing more than a land of shortbread and s***bags and if the chance comes round again nothing will stop me voting YES once more.
This "act" however is a whole different kettle of fish and gives the police power to lift our supporters on trumped up charges which they must surely realise will never stand up in court. How can this guy and his family be put through this nonsense? Celtic vs Hamilton was in February meaning they have had this court date hanging over them for 8 whole months! Absolutely disgusting and what does it all mean? Turn up at Ibrox on any given Saturday to sing your heart out about paedophiles and killing Catholics and you can do so safe in the knowledge that PC Plod and the rest of his ilk will be turning a blind eye while simultaneously tapping their feet to the music and doing everything in their power to stop themselves from harmonizing with you. Perish the thought that the police would do their job in that instance. However sing a song that was played in the Official UK Top 40 and you'll find yourself up in front of a judge with the potential for doing porridge. Roll of Honour reached number 33 in the charts in 2014 and this man has found himself on the end of a charge for belting it out! Is this what things are coming to in this country? Surely if we are going to lift people for chanting UK chart songs then it should be anyone caught singing along to Rhianna and Katy Perry. Actually I find Rhianna and Katy's music offensive so maybe the local constabulary can assist me the next time some bird murders it on the karaoke at a local dive? Of course they won't because offensive behaviour is a bit like beauty being in the eye of the beholder. Everyone has different opinions. We all have varying ideas of what beautiful is and we all have our own thoughts on what offends us as well.
What makes this case even worse is that the police officer who made the arrest admitted that the song doesn't mention the IRA and that he didn't really know what the lyrics were about. Well you might think that excuses him but it doesn't! Not for a second because what exactly was he offended at? This member of Strathclyde's finest was probably trying to make his arrest quota for the day at best or resorting to arresting the easiest target at worst. Absolutely disgusting and the judge rightly threw it out and blasted the decision to prosecute. All this episode does is prove just how much of a bad joke the government's act is. There have been various examples of this since the law was passed. SNP have given the police an excuse to criminalize our supporters and that attitude is rife in the media as well, where they still refer to Celtic and Rangers fans being "as bad each other" No chance and anyone spouting that nonsense should be put straight at once. We do not sing about killing people because of their religion and that is the difference. If SNP want to really make their own difference while the Independence dream is realised then perhaps they can repeal this stupid law and get their joke of a police force under control!
